CURED BY COMRADES’ BLOOD.
STUDENT SAVES FRIEND’S FIFE. RECOVERY OF A “BREEDER.” To save the life of a fellow student four students in the veterinary department of Washington State College recently gave freely of their own blood. Guy Hubbard for several years has been what is termed in medical parlance a “bleeder,” and at frequent intervals would suffer from extreme bleeding at the nose. Recently he suffered an attack of bleeding, and all the ordinary methods known to medical science failed to stop the bleeding. Not only did the blood flow almost steadily from the nose, but the victim suffered hemorrhages under the skin, big blotches forming near the joints. The use of chemicals and “packing” for three days failed to stop the flow of blood. The case was considered critical.
The introduction into the blood of a serum that would increase the coagulation of the blood was considered necessary to save the life of the patient. Two members of the veterinary faculty called the attention of the veterinary class and every student offered to give of his blood in sufficient quantities to obtain the serum. The operation was performed. Blood was taken from the arms of four students. This was allowed to stand eight hours and the serum was then extracted from the clots. The patient was given three injections of the serum under the skin. His condition improved so rapidly that he was allowed to go to his home. Advices from there are that the bleeding has entirely stopped and Hubbard is on the road to recovery.
