SECOND WIFE ANNOYED. An objection by a second wife to her' husband’s “in memoriam” compliments in a newspaper to her predecessor was mentioned in a case before the Birmingham Magistrates recently, when the second wife, Sarah Ann Smith, applied for an increase in the allowance made under a separation order. It was stated tha 4- one of the annoyances from which she suffered was a notice inserted in a newspaper. “In loving memory ot clear wife and mother,” followed by a long verse. After- the Court had: ordered an allowance of 4s per wer-k, she wrote on March 3rd ;—“Dear Mr Smith, —I cannot continue on the 4s weekly. Pk.'se let me know what increase you will make wE’.out my coming into Court again. I ha.v in the priper yoa; tender sentiments regarding the late latrti I am going to try and divert
of these em otions into a channel, w-ince your first wife ' ; ■'eyotid v ,ar indi^:•' e I am bopmg tb ~ as you 1 wi.e, I may come in for a reasonable share of your favour. It would
be no compensation when I am aloft to read how much I am missed, etc., all reduced into doggerel lines to the c’ 1 ' ■•nfiture otrr'e No. 3. Now young man, look after the living, and let the dead remain in peace. Your wiC, Sara . . .nn Smith.”
