APPLES AND THE TEETH.

An interesting report msuod by the Education Department of the London County Council se forth that there is a larger percentage ot beys than girls with bad teeth, and that 39 per cent, of children of well-to-do parents suffer from decayed teeth, as comuared with 27 per cent, of poorer children. A newspaper representative who made inquiry at the Royal Dental Hospital was informed that sweets are the root of most of the dental troubles of children. It was suggested as the reason why boys

have worse teeth than girls that boys have more money to spend on sweets than girls. The report that 39 per cent, of • ,v - to-do children have decayed teeth is said to be 100 low a figure, and 70 p-n- cent, i-; cited as nearer the in vr\ ; arm eels again wp held to be tesponsible. Poor children to content with hard boiled se-< ts, which are crushed to . leces with the. teeth, while children higher in the social scale eat chocolates, caramels, and soft fondants that cling to the teeth, and cause fermentation and decay. But mucu of the evil would be eradicated if not only children, but all persons, were to eat an apple at the end of each meal, as by that means the teeth would be left perfectly clean. Crusts and other food that requires much mastication are also beneficial.
