HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MELTING.
The annual general meeting of members of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held on Thursday evening. The attendance, on account of the very miserable weather conditions, was not large. The president (Mr H. Witchell) occupied the chair. The annual report and balancesheet (already published) was read and adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr A. S. Easton ; President, Mr H. Witchell; VicePresidents, Messsrs Dr. Mandl, G. H. Stiles, P. Hennessy, A. J. Gibbs, H. Greig, B. G. Gower, W. Barber, P. Neylon, John Robinson, Chas. Robinson, W. Ross, G. Rough and A. Speirs; committee, Messrs Hornblow, Jackson, Lurnsden, Henderson, Boyes, D. Whibley, Kempster, Bullard, J. Newth and Walsh, Mesdames Greig, Boyes; Woods, Hillman, Harvey, Hislop, Misses Speirs, Neylon and Madgln; Treasurer, Miss J. A. Ross; Auditor, Mr A. J. Kellow ; Secretary, M. H. C. Patterson (pro tem).
The President mentioned that last year a sub-committee was appointed to go into the affairs of the Society with a view to submitting recommendations for the purpose of putting the finances on a sounder footing. These recommendations were submitted to the meeting and were left to the new committee to deal with.
Prior to the election of a president for the ensuing year, the retiring president, Mr H. Witchell said he was under notice of transfer from Foxton, and although there was a possibility of the transfer being cancelled, there was every likelihood that he would go, and he took the opportunity of expressing his gratitude at the way in which members and the committee had worked with him during his term of office. He referred to the good work done by the Society since its formation in the encouragement of interest in gardening in the town and district, and hoped that at some future time the Society would extend its operations in the direction of beautifying the town. He hoped the Society would continue to prosper, and said he would be very sorry to leave Foxton. Nominations were then invited for the office of president, and Mr Henderson moved that Mr Witchell be re-elected. The mover said there was a possibility that Mr Witchell would remain in Foxton, and if he did the Society could not get a better president. This was the unanimous wish of those present, and Mr Witchell agreed to accept the position, saying if he did go he would then tender his resignation. This announcement was greeted with applause.
Mr Patterson, who has held the position of secretary for some time, definitely tendered his resignation at the annual meeting. He said that he had asked to be relieved during the year, but under pressure had agreed to continue in office until the annual meeting. He had definitely made up his mind to retire from the position, as it interfered with his business. Mr Witchell referred to the excellent services rendered the Society by Mr Patterson, and said he would have liked to see him continue in office. They would do their best to get someone else as soon as possible, and asked him to hold office until this was done. On his motion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Patterson tor past services.
