The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, May 7, 1914. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

It should be unnecessary for us to urge a full attendance of townspeople in the Council Chambers to-night iu response to the Mayor’s invitation to discuss what steps are to be takeu to suitably recognise the bravery of our late townsman, Mr Teviotdale, wbo sacrificed bis life in au attempt to rescue a little lad, from drowning, and to take cognisance of those who also gallantly assisted iu the rescue. The circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Teviotdale should receive the careful consideration of the meeting. The question is a delicate one but let us not forget that we owe a duly to the living as well as to the dead. Foxton has never yet failed iu its duty in these matters and we feel sure some action will be decided this evening to meet the exigency of the case.

Some time since we directed the Manawalu County Council’s attention to the dangerous curves on the Palmerstou-Foxton road between Baiuesseand Raugiotu, pointing out the grave risks incurred by occupants of vehicles and motorists in negotiating the same. We explained, further, that the cost 0! straightening this road would ultimately be saved iu maintenance. Hairbreadth escapes from collisions are almost of daily occurence along these curves, aud some serious accidents have been recorded, which have uot been due to negligence. We are pleased to report that Cr W. E. Barber has taken the matter iu baud, and at Tuesday’s meeting ol the Mauawatu County Council the engineer reported that iu company with Cr Barber, be made an inspection of the Palmerstou-Foxton road with a view to widening aud improving some of the sharp bends. The engineer informed the Council that to improve the road to any great extent would require a considerable sum of money, but some of the worst places could be improved, and he suggested that the Couucil expend about £6O on the most dangerous portions along the road. The Council has adopted this suggestion, and the thanks of settlers and travelling public are due to Cr Barber for his prompt action is saleguarding their lives and property. The Council has also decided to erect motor signals to limit the speed of motor cars at Awahuri township, Awahuri bridge, Rongotea-Longburnbridge, Rongotea township, PalmerstouFoxton road between Pyke’s road and half-mile west ot Bainesse road, Foxton-Shannon bridge, Whirokino bridge, junction of Palmerston-Foxton and SandouFoxton roads, Feildiug-Awahuri road, Boness bridge, Hopping’s corner Sanson’s line, and SandouAwahuri road and Mount Stewart hill. It now remains for the Horowhenua County Council to widen the road at the dangerous betid round the bill, about a mile and a half south of the Whfrokiuo bridge on the Foxton-Levln road, to prevent accidents at this locality.
