It was announced in March from io, Downing Street, London (the official office of the British Government), that the official celebration of King George’s birthday will take place on Monday, June 22, The actual date of the King’s birthday is June 3, when he will be 49 years of age. The total roll of pupils in the Wanganui Education District on December 31 last was 15,614, an increase of 51 1 on the previous year. T. Hogan.” Mr W. A. Veitch, M.P., has received word from the Marine Department that the Governor has appointee him to the Wanganui Harbour Board in succession to the late Mr J. T. Muir.

A successful social under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, was held in the Sunday School last evening. There was a good attendance and the Rev J. M. Thomson presided. The programme was much appreciated, nearly every item being encored. The competition, “Magazine Wedding,” proved very interesting and amusing. The following contributed items : Mrs Boyes, Miss Signal, Messrs Chrystall, Collins, Signal, Buglass, Claris. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Boyes and Mr Signal. Refreshments were provided on a liberal scale by the ladies. Tne next social will be held in about a month’s time.

At a meeting of members of the Foxton Borough Band, held on Tuesday evening, the balancesheet was submitted. This disclosed the Band to be in a very good financial position, there being a credit balance of £25 4s Bd. The receipts, including a credit balance brought forward of £22 3s sd, totalled £59 os 6d, made up of Christmas carolling collections £lO 2s gd, donations and street collections 149 4d, and Racing Club The expenditure totalled £33 19s 4d, made up of conductor’s salary ;£iß 15s, repairs to instruments, etc., £7 4s 4d, cornet £s, coach hire £ 1 12s, canvas and signwriting £1 is, and stamps, etc., 6s 6d.

An interesting situation follows the election of Mr J. E. Wilson as Mayor of New Plymouth, from the fact that that gentleman is at present in the hospital suffering from typhoid fever, says the News. He will be Unable to assume the office in the ordinary way, and the Borough Council propably will have to visit the hospital in a body to instal him, and that on or before Wednesday next. The Municipal Corporations Act provides that the Mayor before entering upon his office shall make and sign a declaration provided by the Act, in the presence of the Council, and such declaration shall be attested by a councillor and the town clerk. It also provides that the mayor elect shall come into office on the first Wednesday in May following his election, and shall continue in office until his successor comes into office. Unless, therefore, Mr Wilson is able to make the declaration on Wednesday, Mr Browne, the present Mayor, will continue to hold office.
