SERIOUS BUSH ACCIDENT.

MAN’S LEG CRUSHED. Wanganui, April 24. In the dense bush at Raorikia, thirty miles from Wanganui, yesterday morniug James Pettigrew, aged 23, was engaged in felling a “drive” when the last tree spun on its stump and fell, pinning Pettigrew to the ground and crushing his right leg to a pulp. His mate extricated him with difficulty, and went for assistance.

Nine men carried the sufferer on au improvised stretcher tor eight miles through dense bush and over rough and precipitous tracks. Medical atteutiou was secured, and the sufferer was admitted to the hospital at xr.3o p.m., hours after the accident. The leg was amputated below the knee this moruing.
