SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present : Messis Hornblow (chairman), Geo. Goley, Hussey, Hunt, Ihos. Henderson, and S. Read. An apology lor absence was received from Mr T. Betty. Correspondence was received from the Education Board : (i) re library grant, suggesting that further books be purchased to the value of £$ 13s, in order to obtain balance of subsidy £10; (2) re school sanitation ; (3) re grants for school libraries ; (4) re alteration in date of financial year to February 28th, and annual meeting of householders —to take place on May 4th ; (5) re nomination of auditor ; (6) re disposal of old heating stoves, and stating that the proceeds on sale of same may be paid into Committee’s account. The Chairman’s action in purchasing disinfectant for the school was endorsed. It was decided to nominate Mr Kent-Johnston for the Board’s approval as auditor. A letter was received from Mr Matthews, supervisor of technical education in the Board’s southern district, re cooking classes for girls and woodwork for boys, stating that the Board would pay rent and furnish a suitable building, and if a new building were erected the Board would pay half-cost of erection and furnish same. The Committee were of opinion that a building for the purpose should be erected in the school grounds, and that portion ot the money could be collected locally. It was decided to hold the matter over for the incoming committee to deal with. The head-teacher’s report was read, and stated, inter alia, that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 365.9, 349-2, 357,3, 350.2, and the average for the whole period, 355.6, out of an average roll number of 397; the average attendance for the quarter ending March 31st was 359.1, out of an average roll number of 399.2. It was decided to order three tons of Westport screened coal. The Chairman was authorised to ask the Borough Council to grade and asphalt the footpath from the school gate to the front entrance in lieu of supply of limestone promised in exchange for gravel. It was decided to advertise old heaters for sale at 10s each. Several accounts were passed for payment. The balancesheet to end of April was read, disclosing the position of funds as follows: picnic, cr. £j 7s 6d; grounds improvement, cr. 4s rod ; library, cr. £ 5 12s yd; and general, dr. 10s 4d. It was resolved to hold the last meeting of the present committee at 7 p.m. on May 4th, prior to the householders’ meeting. Messrs Betty and Coley were appointed visitors.
