The first fixture of the Horowhenua team’s tour, a two days match against Petone, was played on the Petone recreation grounds on Friday and Saturday last, and resulted in an easy win for the home team, the margin being an innings and 66 runs. Horowhenua bad all .the worst of the luck. They batted first on a wet wicket which was very much in favour of the bowlers, and on which they were at a disadvantage, on account of its slowness, being accustomed to fast wickets. Their fast bowler, Retter, also was disabled in the first innings, and was unable to take any further part in the match. While batting, a ball struck his toe, so badly injuring it that he will be unable to take any further part in the tour. Horowhenua, in their first innings, were all disposed of for 54 runs. The wicket had improved when Petone batted, and they gave a very good display, putting on 222. Horowhenua made a better stand in theij second innings, scoring 102. The team received very hospitable treatment at the bands of the Petone Club, and altogether the match was most enjoyable. The following are the scores - Horowhenua —First Innings.
