BATTLE OF ORAKAU.
UNIQUE CEREMONY ON HISTORIC GROUND. Hamilton, April 1. Fifty years ago to-day a fierce fight was proceeding at Orakau, some twenty-five miles from Hamilton, where the defence put up by the Maoris was equal tq anything in the history of the world. To perpetuate the memory of the heroes of the fight the Government has erected a monument on the site of the pa, and this was unvieled to-day by the Minister for Defence, the Hon. J. Allen, in the presence of several thousand Europeans and natives.
