POPULATOIN OF JAVA.

SHORTAGE OF LABOUR.

An extraordinary ohsetvatiou was made by Mr ii. H. Patterson, of tbe firm of MrG. W. S. Patterson and Co., while on a visit to Java recently. Java is less than 600 mile? long, yet has a population of 337,000,000. Mr Patterson said he was assured by merchants in the island that, notwithstanding the immense and apparently overcrowded population, there is an actual shortage of labour there. No one seemed able to assign any cause for this, except that the Malays are lazy. He thought, himself 5 his condition was due to a lack on white ........ vision. A Malay could take a piece of land that one could walk all over in a minute and raise from it enough to keep himself for a year. He would never willingly vdess he wanted money to boy something that he could not make himself, and the consequence was that he very seldom did work.
