SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. Ati important case was decided by Mr J. W. Poynton, 3.M., at the Feildlng S.M. Court yesterday. C. J. D. Skinner, Truant Inspector for the Wanganui Education Board (Mr Ongley) proceeded against W. J. Masters (Mi Murphy) for neglecting to send his boy to school. The evidence was that the lad was kept away from school every Friday to attend a music lesson. Defendant had been given an exemption certificate by the Awahuri School Committee, but the Board had stated the Committee had exceeded its authority. Mr Murphy quoted from the Act a clause which said the Committee had power to grant leave for sickness, bad weather, etc., or other sufficient reason. Mr Ongley replied that “other sufficient reason” did not include music. The Magistrate agreed that the Committee bad no power to grant the exemption certificate for attendance at music lessons, but as it was a case in which defendant had been under a genuine impression that he had the leave, the minimum fine of 2S, with no costs, would be imposed.—Star.
