SHANNON WINS SHIELD
The Hugh Hall Shield match, Shannon v. Foxton, played at Shannon on Saturday, was a very exciting one, and the Foxton team gave its best exhibition of fast scoring this season, but just tailed to accomplish the task set them, Shannon winning by the narrow margin of 18 runs. This win also decided the competition, as it is now impossible for any other team to equal Shannon’s points, and they consequently hold the Hall Shield for another year. Cook won the toss from Tremewan, and sent Shannon to the wickets, Tremewau and Butterworth opening to Burgess aud Hawke, The batsmen opened cautiously,, runs coming very slowly. Changes in the bowling were made, aud with the score at 35 Burgess brought off a brilliant catch in the slips off Cleland, which disposed of Tremewau. He had batted carefully for 24. Two runs later Butterworth was caught by Cleland off Young, aud after a single had been added, Greatbach was run out. Harris and Doidge carried the score to 61, when the former stepped out to Tullett, but missed, and Cook dislodged the bails. Judd followed, and runs continued to come fairly freely. At 83 Judd skied one from Tullett, which Hollington held. Berquist was next, and the partnership put on 24, when Young bowled Berquist —6 for 107. Two runs later the same bowler accounted for Randall. Gillelt joined Doidge, and at 5 o’clock the score was 126, and Tremewau decided to close.
Afternoon tea was partaken of, and at twenty minutes past five Foxton commenced their innings. As the light would not last much later than half-past six, their chances of a win were considered very poor indeed, as it looked almost an impossibility to get anything like the runs required in the time. Foxton could easily have made a draw of the match, but to have any chance in the competition a win was necessary, and the batsmen were instructed to score quickly and take chances if necessary. Tullelt and Burgess opened, the score being started with a single by Burgess. Tullett scored three twos, and then Burgess was smartly taken in the slips by Butterworth off Judd —i for 7. Stiles followed, and ooened bis account with a stroke past point, which realised two. The next ball he put in the same place, but failed to get back in time, and was run out —2 for 10. Clelaud followed, and the score was taken to 25, when Cleland was beaten by Butterworth —3 for 23. Hawke joined Tullett, and skied the first ball, but it was missed. The batsmen then settled down, and gave a splendid exhibition, both scoring all round the wicket. Boundary hits were frequent, and the fieldsmen were kept busy. At 77 Hawke touched one from Randall, which went through the wicket keeper’s hands, but was caught by Butterworth, who was fielding very fine— 4 for 77. Mullins filled the vacancy, Tullett still batting freely. In attempting a short one, however, he was run out —5 for 96. Tullett had played a fine innings for 44, which included seven threes. Whibley was next, but failed to survive an appeal for leg-before on the first ball he received —6 for 99. Cook followed, and after three runs had been scored was run out through Mullins failing to respond to a call— 7 for 102. Young was bowled alter adding three —8 tor 105. Hollington was run out without any addition to the score, and the last man, Heunessy, after scoring three, was caught by Tremewan, off Doidge. The innings closed at half-past six.
