HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
The Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show was held yesterday afternoon and evening, there being very good attendances on both occasions. In the absence the President (Mr H. Witchell) the Mayor performed the opening ceremony, and in doing so referred to the very fine exhibition that had been made, and congratulated the officials and members of the Society on the progress made since its formation.
The entries both as regards number and quality were excellent and tbe tasteful manner in which they were arranged reflected great credit on the stewards, all exhibits being so placed as to give the best possible results. The display of cut blooms was very good and the judge in this section, Mr Nairn, expressed the opinion that they compared favourably with those exhibited at any show in the district, and proved beyond any doubt that Foxtou’s soil and climate was very suitable for the growing of flowers. Mr Nairn specially mentioned an entry of blue hydrangeas, grown by Mrs C. H, Svmons, which he said were the finest blooms of this particular species that he had seen. The blue hydrangea is rather uncommon and Mr Nairn attributed the colouring to the iron in the soil.
The following are the winners of the points prizes: Pot plants, Miss Speirs; out blooms, Mrs Gal* land; fruit, W, Bullard; vege* tables, P. W. Brown; farm produce, Foxton School; home industries, Mrs P, Easton ; decora* tive, Mrs Geo. Barber; cookery, Miss Speirs. Tu the early part of the evening ; the Borough Band played several selections outside the hall. The sheep guessing competition was won by Mrs A. King and the beau guessing by Mr V. Wright. The tearooms, under the supervision of Mesdames J, Newlh and Hillman, were capably managed and as a result of same the receipts of the show were considerably augumented, the total takings being £3 3s 6d. At present it is not known exactly how the function turned out from a financial point of view, but in every other respect it was a pronounced success, All the officials worked splendidly and it was entirely due to their efforts that the function was brought to such a successful Issue. In order to get everything ready for the opening at 2.30 o’clock it was necessary to make a start at the conclusion of the meeting held in the hall on the Thursday even-ing-after 10 o’clock, and also to commence again at an early hour yesterday morning and the Society is indeed fortunate in possessing members who have its interests so much at heart.
