The usual monthly meeting of the Foxtou Borough Council will be held in the Council Chamber, on Wednesday, nth inst., at 7.30 p.m. Business—general.

In order to facilitate the tracing of persons liable for training who are believed to be evading their obligations to serve, the Defence Department Is having lists printed quarterly containing such names. A warrant has been issued at Dunedin for the apprehension of a well-known solicitor in an Otago country town, on a charge of forgery and uttering. It is understood that the amount involved is some hundreds of pounds. The solicitor in question was to have come before the Otago Daw Society, but he failed to appear, and his whereabouts at the present time are unknown. A member of a suburban Methodist Church in Christchurch spoke very candidly at the opening of a sale of work and picture show in the church the other day. “ I give you the message as it appears to me,” he said, quoting'Scriptural references to the injunction. “ Make not My FatherTfiouse an house of merchandise.” He doubted very much whether church members were doing the right thing in raising money fcr the church by bazaars held in the church.

Inspector Wilson was a visitor to Foxton this afternoon on police business.

The elder girl was struck dead. Half of her chest was burnt through, her face and head denuded of hair, and the whole of her body frightfully burnt and scorched. The sister sustained severe injury and was paralysed. The Government’s position seems to be assured for this year. The Ministerial forces are well organised, and their opponents are comparatively a guerrilla army of factions which have their own “ differences,” also ma.uy distracting questions may largely divert public attention in the town from the land, but inevitably the Government will run into grave trouble unless they seriously disturb the large landowners.
