Tire Presbyterian Sabbath School picnic, held in the Park on Saturday, was a most enjoyable affair. Parents and friends of the children provided toys and refreshments in abundance and all kinds of games and races were indulged in to the entire satisfaction of the youngsters, who returned to their homes in the evening tired but happy. No trace of the body of the unfortunate man, John Kell, who was drowned whilst bathing at Broad and Ingram’s mill on Sunday the 22nd ultimo, has yet been found. To-day being the ninth day since the fatality, the police ate patrolling the river in the vicinity In the hope that it will come to the surface.

We regret to record the death of Ivan, the 21 mouths old son of Mr and Mrs J. Nelson, of Johnston Street, which took place at the Palmerston Hospital yesterday. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon.

An up-river excursion will be held to-morrow afternoon, the launch, Taulora, leaving the wharf steps at 2 o’clock for the Long Reach, remaining there long enough for afternoon tea to be partaken of and arriving back at the wharf at 5 o’clock. Return fare 2s 6d. The local Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show will be held in the Town Hall on Friday afternoon and evening next. Entries close with the secretary at 10 o’clock to morrow night. The Show this year is again restricted to one day. Everything points to a record exhibition.

A gig containing two men, apparently under the influence of liquor, presented an unpleasant sight to passers by on the Himatangi road on Sunday afternoon. The men were sleeping in the gig, one hanging over either side of the splash board. A passer-by tied the horse up to a fence. At last night’s Council meeting a letter was read from the Secretary of the Foxtou Cricket Club, applying lor the use of Victoria Park for the holding of the cricket carnival to morrow afternoon, and for permission to charge for admission, adults sixpence, children threepence. The application was granted. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council, which is held on the second Monday in each month has been postponed this month until Wednesday, the 12th instant, on account of the new operator taking up his duties on the Monday night, and the necessity of the Town Clerk’s attendance at the hail.

The Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Railways, accompanied by Mr E. H. Hiley, general manager, will visit Foxton on Thursday in connection with the negotiations by the Harbour Board for the purchase of the wharf. The party will arrive at Foxton by motor car at 10 a.m. and will leave for Levin at 1.30 p.m.

The Salvation Army are holding their Harvest Thanksgiving services next Sunday, the Bth of March, in the Masonic Hall. Captain N. K. Brown is the officer appointed to conduct these meetings. There will be special addresses, singing and decorations in keeping with the season. On the Monday night a special programme will be given commencing at 8 p.m., in which the young people of the corps will take a prominent part.

It is said there was a very big two-up school at one of the outlying mills on Sunday, Also that the police got wind of same and paid a visit, but those taking part in the game received ample warning from their scouts and when the “limbs of the law” arrived at the spot there were no signs of “kips” or pennies, and beyond the crowd oi men congregated, some of whom had no business there, no evidence that the law had been fractured in anyway. The Queen of the South, with general Irom Wellington, and the Awahou with coal from Greymouth arrived at midday on Sunday, and the Kenueday with coal from Westport arrived at noon yesterday. The Queen of the South sailed last night for Wellington with hemp and wool, and the Awahou at midday to-day, also for Wellington with hemp and tow. The Kennedy will load tomorrow for Westport. The Queen of the South is due to-morrow with a general cargo from Wellington.

Having jusr. landed an up-to-date supply of catering utensils from England. Mr M. Perreau is now in a position lo specialise in catering, which will be undertaken in any part of the district.*
