The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, February 21, 1914. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
At present there are over four hundred pupils on the roll of the local State school, and if the number increases, further accommodation will be required. The school environment during the past lew years has been greatly improved and the grounds are becoming more attractive each year. Tbe opinion has been expressed that too much time is taken up by the elder scholars in gardening to the detriment of their mental studies. The inspectors’ reports, however, make it clear that the standard of class work is well up to the average of the best primary schools under tbe Board’s jurisdiction, while the agricultural course is having a wholesome effect upon the home life of tbe scholars, at the same time giving them a practical knowledge of the value of fertilisers, etc. A wellequipped library is also provided, and the committee and staff are making provision for games to suit the varying tastes and physique of the youngsters. The tone of the school can be guaged by tbe conduct of the children both in and out of school, and In this connection there is little room for complaint. Technical classes have been established, which provide opportunities in advanced work for pupils and others desirous of joining. It is the Committee’s ambition to make the local school one of the foremost primaiy institutions in tbe Wanganui district, and we sincerely hope their objective will be attained.
