The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, February 5, 1914. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The liberal Party is commencing in earnest to organise for the general elections to be held at the end of this year. A conference was held in Parliament Buildings this week, over which the Leader of the Opposition (Sir Joseph Ward) presided. It is reported that representatives from every constituency in the Dominion were in attendance, and the greatest enthusiasm was shown throughout the proceedings. The meeting decided upon a plan of operations, with a view to educating public opinion of the country. Sir Joseph Ward has also donned his war paiut, and delivered a political address at Te Aroha oa Friday evening last, where he dealt at considerable length with the recent strike, and denied emphatically that the Opposition Party was in any degree sympathetic with the Federation of Labour. He was in favour of settling the strike by an appeal to reason rather than by an appeal to force. He condemned the action of the Government in repealing the Second Ballot Act and substituting nothing therefor. He also dwelt on the beneficial legislation passed by the Seddon and Ward Governments. Sir Joseph was subsequently presented by the members of the Te Aroha Liberal League with a loyal and congratulatory address.
