The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, January 22nd, 1914. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
TnK South African syndicalists are being taught the lesson which it seems necessary to teach everywhere to those foolish enough to believe that law abiding citizens iu democratic countries will submit to revolutiouary risings, says the Auckland Herald. Armed gangs of syndicalists challenged the Government apparently without conception of the force which could be brought against them, and which Mr Botha and his colleagues were compelled to bring against them or admit their incapacity to govern. Fortunately, there has never been any doubt as to the ultimate eud of the South Africau upheaval. Mr Botha, whatever mistakes he may have made iu entering into political understandings with the syndicalists, has faced the present crisis with determination and he has had the loyal aud unwavering support of the Leader of the Opposition. Under the necessity of maintaiuiug law aud order political partisanship has been forgotten in South Africa. As iu New Zealand, under similar but less trying circumstances, farmers and citizens of all classes have rallied to the support of the Government. The result can only be the humiliation of the syndicalists and a period of distress and unemployment which has been the sequel to every strike organised on syndicalist lines.
