LIEUT. HAMMOND.
FUES GIFT MONOPLANE. WATCHED BY THOUSANDS. Auckland, January iS. The initial flight in New Zealand ot the B-eriol monoplane presented to Delence Forces, was made at Epsom, yesterday by Lieut. J. J. Hammond of the Royal Flying Corps. For a quarter of an hour in a considerable breeze the machine described circles above Epsom attaining a speed of 80 miles an hour, and landed again without mishap. For an hour this morning Mr Hammond flew over the town and harbour and was watched by thousands" He circled over U Exhibition and then followed rue line of Queen Street to the waterfront where be sainted the warships Psyche, Philomel and Pyramus. Then by a circntious route he returned to the hangar at Epsom Showgrounds. The machine is undoubtedly a very tine one and was all the time under perfect control.
