Whooping cough is very prevalent locally and throughout nearly the whole of the North Island. The next ordinary meeting of the Moutoa Drainage Board will be held on Thursday next, 15th inst., at 7.45 p.m. Business, general. A man named Hugh Frizzell, between 30 and 40 years of age, was found drowned on the Timaru Marine Parade on Saturday. Robert August Jager, 35 years of age, a resident of South Dunedin, died while watching a picture entertainment on Saturday night. The six-3'ear-old sou of Mr and Mrs W. Robinson, of Duncan street, was taken to the District Hospital yesterday, suffering from lung complications following an attack of whooping cough. An eleven-year-old boy, named Sheen, was drowned at Casllecliffe on Saturday. He was bathing in the surf, and was caught in the undertow. A companion made a gallant attempt at rescue. The death is reported from Auckland of Colonel Noake, a veteran of the Crimea, Indian Mutiny and Maori wars. He was formerly a Magistrate in the Wanganui district. A new era iu the history of Tauranga was inaugurated yesterday, when a start was made with the drainage works and electric light and power station, to cost ,£.37,000. One of the most profitable and interesting pastimes by Beach residents is trawling and many of the sportsmen are becoming expert fishermen. We give the gentle hint, however, that there is a limit to the size of the flounders which can be taken for consumption. One of the best known and most respected veterans ofthe Wanganui district is dead, iu the person of Mr Silas Wall, a builder, aged 67 years. He came out in the ship Alma, lauding in New Zealand iu ISSB, and practically ever since that time Mr Wall had been a resident of Wanganui. It was decided at last night’s Council meeting, on the motion of Cr Freeman, seconded by Cr Joley, that six wire receptacles be placed iu Main Street for empty paper bags, fruit peelings, etc., and thus try and avoid all debris being thrown on the streets. There was quite a long discussion on this motion, which brought from the Mayor the remark that there was more discussion ou it tbau 01: the water supply scheme. The Hou. Geo. Fowlds eutertained his election committees at Auckland ou Saturday prior to a trip abroad. Mr F'owlds intends to contest Grey Lynn at the general elections. Referring to the last election he said : “ We had a combination of circumstances that was in a way peculiar. The most that cau be said about it is that a fluke occurred. I have uo expectation that a similar result will occur again. There is not the slightest fear of that.” Grey Lynn was not the only electorate where a fluke occurred ! One of the oldest residents of Shannon, Mrs Annie Giugell, passed away on Sunday at the advanced age of 81. The deceased lady was the relict of the late Thomas Giugell, and was a resident there of 23 years’ standing. Mr aud Mrs Giugell arrived in Wellington from England in December 1879, iu the ship Hermioue. Mrs Giugell, whose husband died in 1894, was a native of Glocertershire. She leaves two sons aud two daughters : Mr T. H. Gingell, of Foxton, Mr K. G. Giugell and Mrs Nichol, of Shannon, aud Mrs Cox, of Bunnyihorpe. Sincere sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. It is rumoured that a certain, local business is to change bands shortly. Mr Twist, travelling representative of the Dramatic aud Sporting Review, is on a visit to Foxtou. McCormick defeated Johnny Summers in the welter-weight championship ot the Empire at Sydney on Monday in a twenty rounds contest on points. The poundkeeper reported at last night's Council meeting that during the mouth ot December 13 head of cattle had been impounded by the ranger. The Mayor mentioned at last night’s Council meeting that the output of gas at the local works for the mouth of December showed an increase of 18,000 to 20,000 feet over the output for the same mouth of the previous year. There were present at last night’s Borough Council meeting, His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. H. Stiles), aud Cis Coley, Whibley, Green, Freeman, Read, Henderson, Barber, Chrystall aud Speirs. A special meeting of the Council was held prior to the ordinary meeting last night, for the purpose of fixing the statutory half-holiday for the current year, when it was decided, on the motion of Cr Freeman, seconded by Cr Henderson, that the holiday be observed on Wednesday, as at present. The Foxton Racing Club’s silver cup, a handsome piece of plate of attractive design, for the forthcoming meeting, aud also a gold-mounted riding whip, inscribed, to be presented to the jockey riding the winner of the Foxtou Cup, presented by Mrs Leu. Freeman, are at present on view in the window of Mr R, M. Parkes’ shop. The Rev. Henry Hodgson, curate ot Creditiou, Devon, was the victim of a strange accident on Monday. He had in his possession a Boer shell that was believed to be harmless, and desiring to fit a handle in it, he heated a bayonet aud tried to force it into the top of the shell. Instantly there was an explosion, which shattered Mr Hogdson’s leg, smashed the furniture, aud broke the window. At last night’s Council meeting, reports were read from the District Health Officer and Local Fire Inspector, in connection with the Royal Hall, and it was decided, on the motion of Cr Whibley, seconded by Cr Henderson, That Mr aud Mrs Hamer be supplied with copies of the Health Officer’s and Fire Inspector’s reports re their Hall, aud that they be given fourteen days iu which to carry out these improvements, and when carried out satisfactorily to trie Council the license will be granted. Eleven tenders were received at last night’s Council meeting for the combined position of ranger, dog tax collector, lamp lighter, assistant Hall caretaker, and inspector ot nuisances. The tenders ranged from ,£3 to .£5 xos per week. The matter was dealt with iu committee, aud on resuming business it: was decided, on the motion of Cr Chrystall, seconded by Cr Barber, that the tender of Mr Darcy Kuewstubs, at ,£3 per week, be accepted. The Queeu of the South sailed ou Saturday night for Wellington, and the Awahou from Wellington crossed inwards ou the same tide, but got stuck at Robinson’s bend, and did not reach the wharf until Sunday morning. Sbei|left the wharf last uight for Wellington with about x.ooo bales of wool, but ou account of the lowness of the river, could not uegotiate a bank near Herriugtou, aud returned to the wharf. She sailed again this morning, and stuck on the same bank, but got off a little later. The Queen of the South with general cargo from Wellington arrived at about 10 o'clock this morning. The Moa with coal from Westport arrived outside at about half past twelve, too late for the tide, but it is expected she will cross ou to-uight’s tide. The amount of gas manufactured at the local works during December was 309,000 ft. which with the amount in holder 'on December xst, 6000 ft., made a total of 315,000 ft. The amount sold to consumers was 241,000 ft., 137,800 ft. being for lightiug aud 103,200 ft. for cooking and power, 28,500 ft, was used iu the street lamps, 29,500 ft. iu the works and manager’s house and there was 7,0001 t. iu the holder ou January xst, leaving 9,000 ft. unaccounted for. The amount of coal carbonised was, tons yielding 11,444 ft. per tou. The earnings amounted to ,£137 os ad, made up of gas sales ,£lls 19s id, tar sales 3s, coke sales £2 17s gd, fitting account 16s od, weighing 2s 6d aud coal ,£l7 is 6d. The expenditure amounted to ,£93 6s sd, made up of coal ,£32 14s, wages ,£42 14s 2d, report on works ,£l4 7s 9d aud sundries £3 xos 6d.
