FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ PICNIC.

The Friendly Societies’ picnic held in Victoria Park on New Year’s Day was very largely attended, the special trains from Feilding and Palmerston North being crowded with excursionists, and there was also a large attendance of local people. The weather was gloriously fine, and the picnic was much enjoyed by all who attended. Great interest was evinced in the baby shows, for which there were a large number of entries. The competition foi babies under 12 months was won by Mrs E. Murphy, Palmerston North, Mrs F, Vertougen, Foxton, being second. For babies under six mouths, Mrs G. Ashworth, Feilding, was awarded first prize, and Mrs Lance second. During the afternoon there was a free distribution of toys to the children. The Foxtou Borough Band rendered selections at intervals, which considerably enlivened the proceedings. The following are the spoils results : —Boys’ race, Sweeney 1, Liddell 2. Men’s race (1 ooyds), Harnett 1, Healey 2. Sack race, Kitchen 1, Dudsou 2. Addition race, Guy. Chain-stepping competition, McKenzie 1, Rand 2. Friendly Societies’ race, Towler x, Harnett 2. Three-legged race, Harnett and Paki. Married ladies’ race, Mrs Cresswell. Married men’s race, Paki. Young ladies’ race, Miss Belt. Potato race, Dalton. Chain stepping competition, (ladies’), Mrs Guilder 1.
