The services in All Saints’ Church to-morrow will be as usual at 8 a.m., 11 a.m. aud 7 p.m. Mr Gowie, an ex-teacher of the local Stale school has successfully passed his final solicitor’s examination.

Mr and Mrs and Mr Esmond Greig have again taken up their residence in Foxton, after a very enjoyable tour of the Old World.

Mr Harry Coley informs us that Monday night’s hurricane was the severest he has yet experienced. This opinion is endorsed by many old settlers in this district. The Christmas number of the War Cry devotes a full page illustrative of the hemp industry, from the green blade to the pressed hank. A splendid opportunity is afforded local people of purchasing up till to-night, some of Mr Kirkwood’s celebrated paintings, now on view in Mr Strong’s shop. These beautiful works of art depict some ot New Zealand’s beauty spots, and are unsurpassed for Christmas gifts. The Government plantation between Motuiti and Himataugi bears evidence of Tuesday’s fierce gale. Trees have been uprooted and limbs have been torn off, and in one spot a track has been clean cut through the trees. In Phyune Street a trap shed, with the opening facing the wind was blown over a box-thorn hedge into an adjoining section. Huge trees were blown down in all parts of the borough, and a number ol small buildings demolished, A meeting of the Holiday Association was held in Mr Simmons’ office on Thursday night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr G. H. Stiles}, Messrs Bauckham, Barr, Collins, Walker and Furrie, Better, Simmons, Perreau, Betty and Woodroofe. Mr Perreau was elected chairman, and on the motion of Messrs Stiles and Belly, Mr Woodroole was added to the executive. With regard to the forthcoming holidays, the following resolutions were carried: “ That Xmas Day, and Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the day following be observed as holidays, and to close from u a.m. on both Foxton race days. The motion to include Saturday in the forthcoming holidays was lost by a majority of 9 to 2. It was also decided that the Chairman wait upon the manager of the Royal Hall, also on the. Mayor, with a view to having both picture balls closed on Xmas Eve.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, judgment for plaintiffs was entered up in the following undefended civil cases:—Dr. Adams v. C. A, Wallace, claim £6 6s, costs 23s 6d ; C. A. Roth v. R. Apatare 13s id, costs 40s 6d ; G. T. Woodroofe v. R. B. Anderson £1 gs, costs ss; J. Peranov. W. Knapp ,£2l 15s, costs £2 14s, and an order made for immediate possession of house. In the judgment summons Dr. Adams v. C. Spiers, judgment debtor did not appear, and was ordered to pay 7s 6d on or before January 30th, in default 24 hours imprisonment. D. Kennedy also did not appear- and was ordered to pay Dr Adams £23 18s forthwith in default three weeks imprisonment, order to be suspended if instalments of £2 per month are paid. In the case M. Hamer v. James Groom, judgment debtor was examined as to his earnings, and after hearing his evidence the Magistrate refused to make au order.

The Rev, Father Dore informs us that he hopes the collection taken at St. Mary’s Church last Sunday in aid of the District Hospital, will reach The strike is practically over and has been declared off in Australia. The seamen and fire men have decided to go back and shipping will resume normal conditions as from Monday. The services in the Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Minister, the Rev. J. M. Thomson, m.a., in the morning, and by Mr J. Chryslall in the evening. The children’s portion from “Pilgrim’s Progress” is the Meeting with Apollyon. The report of the case Inspector of Factoiies v. F. S. Easton, an alleged breach under the Regulations iti respect to the accommodation to be provided for flaxmill workers, heard at yesterday’s sitting of the Court, will appear in Tuesday’s issue. Special Christmas services will be held in the local Methodist Church to-morrow. The morning service will be conducted' by the Rev T. Coatswoith, and the evening service by Mr G. Huntley. Special Chistmas hymns and anthems will be snug. On Christmas Day, services will be con ducted at the Beach at 2.30 p.m., and at Foxtou at 7 p.m., by the Rev T. Coatsworth. . A hearty invitation to these services is extended to all.
