Said to be the oldest ship in the world in active service, the Copenhagen yacht Constance, has been sold to a fisherman of Skaw, in Jutland. The Constance was built 193 years ago, and in her long life she has sailed into almost every port in the world. The ordinary sitting of the Magistrate’s Court will be held locally before Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M. to-morrow. Among the cases set down for hearing are two brought by the police against two local residents for alleged abusive language, the word “scab " which has been brought into great prominence on account of the recent industrial upheavals, preceded by a distinguishing adjective being responsible for the prosecutions. There is also a case of alleged assault, and a number of debt cases.

The London Daily Mail remarks that old-fashioned administrators returning to Downing street after a long absence would be shocked to discover the extent to which female secretaries are now being used. Mr Lloyd George has two women as confidential secretaries at the Treasury ; Mr Asquith has a female secretary, and so has the Chief Liberal Whip. Women are not eligible lor Class I. of the Civil Service. If they do the same work as men their salaries are lower and they are not borne on the Treasury list; that is, they are quite personal appointments. But they are generally credited with the power of keeping a secret.
The local tennis players who visited Shannon yesterday afternoon had a rather novel experience. They left Foxton by motor, but on reaching the Shannon side of the bridge, found the road flooded, the water being too deep for the cars to get through. The offer of a ride to Shauuou in a passing milk cart was eagerly accepted. Immediately after the match, advice was received that the water was still rising, and fears were entertained as to the safety ot the cars, which had been left near the bridge. Two of th» visitors hired a gig, and arrived just in time to get the cars out, the remainder of the team making the journey between Shannon and the bridge per medium of a dray and three horses. To say the least, Foxtou’s tennis players are real enthusiasts.
