CRICKET.
The Horowhenua Cricket Association’s competition for the Hugh Hall Shield was commenced Saturday, Foxton playing Shannon on the local pitch and Levin playing Otaki at Levin,
The local match was a very exciting one, Foxton managing to defeat the present holders of the Shield by the narrow margin ot nine runs. The local team was without the services of Redgrave and others, and on paper the visitors looked to have more than an even chance of winning, especially after batting first and compiling 71, but the local men played a splendid up-hill game, and when the last wicket fell their score was 80. Tremewau, who for years has been Shannon’s most consistent batsman, scored 44, giving a very good display of careful batting. Tullett was the most successful Foxton bowler, being responsible for six wickets at a cost of 41 runs, Edlin securing two for three runs. Cook, behind the wickets, was in fairly good form, catching four men out. Burgess and Stiles opened Foxton’s innings. The first wicket fell at 9, the second at 18 and the third at 2i.- Here Cook and Howe were partnered and their careful batting was the means of breaking up the bowling somewhat. The partnership put on 36 runs, when Cook was caught. The next wicket fell without any addition being made to the score, and three runs later the sixth and seventh wickets fell. Foxton were playing two colts and consequently matters now presented a very interesting appearance as 12 runs were still required to win. Cook instructed the remaining men to play careful and his instructions were well carried out, the ingoing batsmen keeping their end up while Howe made the runs. Howe s score was 40 not out and he received a well-deserved hand clap when the innings was over. Judd bowled well for Shannon, getting six wickets for 23 runs. Messrs E. J. King (Shannon) and F. Martin (Foxton) officiated as umpires. The following are the scores Shannon. The Levin-Otaki fixture resulted in a win for Levin by default, Otaki failing to put a team in the field.
The match against Levin to have been played to-morrow has been indefinitely postponed. If sufficient roll up to the ground a scratch match will be played. The committee of the Foxton Cricket Club acknowledge with thanks the donation of a bat by Mr W. Nye. Mr Nye has retired from active service in the Club, but he still continues to take a keen interest in the game. In order to popularise the “good old game”, the committee of the Cricket Club intend holding a carnival shortly. The star item will be a fancy dress match, ladies v. men.
