At the local Police Court yesterday morning, James Warren Williams, an elderly man, appeared before Mr Hornblow, J.P., charged by the police with wilfullv setting fire at Foxton to a fiveroomed building used as a dwelling, the property of J. W. Williams (accused), valued at a five-roomed building used as a dwelling, the property of A. S. Patterson and Co., of Wellington, valued at ,£125.

Constable Woods asked for a remand to Palmerston on the 15th inst. The accused had nothing to say, and the remand was granted. At an early hour on Sunday morning an attempt was made to burn down a cottage occupied by Mrs Williams, in Watson street, oil Ravensworth Place. Mrs Williams aroused the neighbours, and the fire was extinguished before any material damage was done. Some time after, the house occupied by accused on his farm, near the cemetery, was destroyed, together with its contents. Williams gave himself up to the police. The accused is an elderly, quiet, unassuming man, and wellknown locally. Some time ago he attempted to take his life, and since then it is stated he has been suffering from insomnia. He was transferred to Palmerston yesterday.
