The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, December 2, 1913. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Auckland Exhibition opened yesterday. The Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union membership now totals over 1700. The locally-owned Lady Laddo won the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding races on Satuiday.
A meeting of the committee of the Foxton Horticultural Society will be held tonight, at 7.30 o’clock. The vital statistics for Foxtou for the mouth of November are as follow : —Marriages 1, births 8, deaths 2.
The ordinary meeting of the Moutoa Drainage Board will be held on Thursday next, 4th inst., at 7.45 p.m. Business: General. Mr A. H. Colton, has consented to stand as an Independent Liberal at the next general election for the Bay of Islands. On the fourth page of this issue will be found the following interesting reading matter : —“How Words Vary,” “Boxing,” aud ‘‘What au Elephant Drinks.”.
The children of All Saints’ Sunday School will receive their prizes on Thursday next. Mr R. T. Betty will give some gramophone items during the evening. The function will take place in All Saints’ Sunday School, at 7.30 p.m. The vicar hopes that parents and others will be present. Jack Johnson met the Liberian, Spoul, in a catch-as-catch-cau wrestling bout at Paris on Saturday. Spoul was persistently and ferociously fouling and attacking the referee. Johnson warned him he would be knocked out if he continued, and eventually felled him with a blow. Spoul bad to be carried out of the ring, A meeting of the Horowheuua Cricket Association is to be held at Levin to-morrow night for the purpose of making all arrangements in connection with the competition for the Hugh Hall Shield. It is anticipated that four teams, Shannon (present holders), Foxtou, Levin aud Otakl will take part in the competition. The tootling of the engine aud the reports of detonators as the train for Palmerston drew out of the station this morning startled the neighbourhood. Was it the signal of the approach of the phantom Red Fed army from Tokomaru led by the gallant and bellicose local iutiraidator, with the object of capturing the wharf ? Investigation revealed the fact that a newly-married couple were aboard the train aud were being honoured by the railway staff. Twenty-three candidates, including two other than school pupils, presented themselves for the proficiency examination at the local State school yesterday. Mr Hornblow supervised the exami nation. The work, as a whole, was very satisfactory, some of the candidates reaching a standard of excellence. The results should reflect creditably upon the teaching staff. Mr J. B. Laureusou, the Opposition candidate for Lyttelton, gave evidence last session before the Iron and Steel Committee of the House of Representatives. Mr Lautensou, who was chairman of the Christchurch Ironmasters’ Association, took great trouble in compiling valuable information, and those who heard his evidence were struck with the thorough manner in which he had marshalled his facts and figures.

The Awabou’s outward cargo consists of 785 bales of hemp and low. She is expected to leave to-night. Yesterday a fine specimen of the confectioner’s art in the form of a two-decker wedding cake was on view in Mr J. Wall’s bakery window. The cake graced the festive board at a local wedding this morning. The up-river picnic, under the auspices of the Manawatu Rowing Club, to have been held to-morrow, has, on account of the unsettled state of the weather been postponed indefinitely. The Awahou, which arrived yesterday, was manned by an expert crew. She lelt Wellington on Sunday evening, and encountered very severe weather, but made splendid headway. It is probable that the Queen with a general cargo will arrive from Wellington, and the Wootteu from Lyttelton at the end of the week.
A list of subjects were set for the essay in the English section of the proficiency examinations at the local Stale school yesterday. Included among the subjects set was “a strike,” aud more than half of the pupils selected it as their test. The manner in which the pupils tackled the subject and the grip they appeared to have of the evils of such industrial warfare made it apparent that young New Zealand has absolutely no time for Red Fed doctrines.
