WHAT AN ELEPHANT DRINKS.

Auy oue who, even in a spirit of purely scientific inquiry, asks some of the keepers in the Bronx Zoo how much water au elephant drinks, is in danger of receiving a rude retort, if not actually bodily injury.

The large water pipe supplying the elephant and hippopotamus houses burst underground, and as repairs took some time, two keepers bad to bring all the water their charges required a small distance away.

They found, to their disgust, that Gunda, the largest elephant, alone took sixty quarts at breakfast, had 160 quarts with dinner and needed as much again for supper. This is, Gunda’s day’s drink amounted to 380 quarts, or ninety-five gallons. This was only oue elephant’s drink. Two smaller elephants were not satisfied with less than 250 to 300 quarts a day each, and even the pigmy elephant’s thirst cannot be quenched with less than 200 quarts a day.
