THE STRIKE.

The Lyttelton wharf presents a lively scene, and has now recovered its former vigour and activity.

No trouble is now experienced at Dunedin in getting all the labour required to work the wharves.

The membership of the new Watersiders’ Union at Wellington is now 1570.

Everything is quiet at Auckland, and work is proceeding merrily. Owing to shortness of funds strike pay has been reduced from 15s 6d to 14s (3d per week. Wellington, Nov. 27.

The Shaw Savill liner Coriuthic had got through the discharge of her cargo, and was preparing to get away for Lyttelton, when, just before six o’clock, the firemen refused to work, 28 out of the 33 men were arrested, and yesterday pleaded guilty to refusing duty and expressed their willingness to return. This they have been allowed to do, and the vessel left for Lyttelton.

STRIKE LEADERS BEFORE THE COURT

W. T. Young one of the strike leaders was before the Wellington S.M. Court yesterday. After hearing evidence the S.M. reserved his decision, and accused was remanded till Thursday next. George Bailey, sometime chairman of strikers’ open-air meetings in Wellington, was charged with inciting people to commit a breach of peace. He was bound over to keep the peace for twelve months in own recognisance of ,£2OO and two sureties of each. Peter Fraser, secretary of Social-Domo-cratic Party was similarly treated. The charge against Fraser of having incited resistance of police was withdrawn. The cases of Semple, Holland, and Barker were remanded to December 4, when decision in Young’s case will be given, counsel stating that the defence in each case would be similar to that in Young’s.
