TRIBUTE TO SPECIALS.
BY NAVAL COMMANDER
Captain Stopford, Commander of H.M.S. Pyramus, in a letter to the officer in command of the special constables at Auckland, says:—
I wish it were possible to express in an adequate manner my thanks to those volunteers who assisted to coal the Pyramus. It was an incident, I think, without parallel in the history of the Navy. There can be little lear for the future of the country which produces men of such spirit. Deeds like this help one to realise the cause of the greatness of the British Empire. Please do me the favour of convey ing to those thorough sportsmen this message of appreciation of every soul on board the ship by allow-
ing this letter to be read on parade. Believe me, the incident will never be forgotten. This is but a poor way of expressing ray feelings. I beg to remain, yours very gratefully, (signed) P. T. Stopford, Commander,
