A WIN FOR FOXTON
Almost ideal weather conditions prevailed yesterday for the FoxtonShannon match, and the whole of the seventeen games were played off without a hitch. Some of the visitors who arrived early were entertained at lunch by the Club, and play started at 2.30 p.tn.
The Foxton ladies’ team was considerably weakened owing to the top lady being unavailable for the match. Another good lady player was indisposed. This, together with the fact that the Shannon ladies are decidedly strong, gave Shannon all the ladies’ contests (8). Much credit is, however, due to the bold ‘fight put up by the local ladies. The Shannon men’s team, however, as their secretary goodnaturedly put it, “has learnt a little from the Foxton team”—• evidently something they didn’t know, as the nine men’s contests were won by Foxton. This gave the win tor the day to the local club by nine games to eight. The total points were, Foxton 6jß, Shannon 529. On the whole, the two clubs were very evenly matched, and had it not been for the scientific game played by the local men, the result might have been different. The two clubs are, however, to meet again in the near future. At the finish of the match, the visitors expressed their thanks to the Foxton Club, and hearty cheering from both sides brought the day to a close.
