The Manawatu Herald. Thursday. November 6, 1913. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Till' sliikc continues, and people aie now beginning to realise the ciiminal cruelly of the Syndicalistic weapon. The threats of the imported agitators are now being partly realised. We say partly advisedly, because the woisl is yet to be feated. The Federation leaders refuse to be bound by the Arbitration law, and claim the right to strike whenever it suits them to do so, and “to hell with agreements.’’ The present trouble his arisen through the waterside workers breaking their agreement with the employers by knocking off work to discuss what action should be taken in respect to a few shipwrights, who had a grievance. Knocking off during working hours meant a serious dislocation to shipping. Meu were employed ou the ships to fill the places of those who had ceased work. Then the trouble began. The men demanded to resume work ou ships where they had been previously engaged. This the employers refused to con cede, pointing out that through ceasing to work they had broken their agreement and could not now resume work under it- Then followed the strike, both sides holding out. Several attempts were made at a settlement, but proved abortive. The Federation of Labour then took the strike in hand on behalf of the employees, and the results lollowing need no repetition. The strike bids fair to lead to a national disaster. Hoodlums and roughs are let loose, and riots are uovv of daily occurrence. The authorities called for special police to assist in maintaining law and order, and these are singled out for special violence by the mob. Important industries are being paralysed, and the outlook is gloomy. We received a message from Wellington to day stating that an attempt is to be made to load the Atheuic with the aid of free labour. This will be the beginning of the end.
