MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. In the absence of the chairman Cr H. H. Hunt was voted to the chair, and Crs. J. Henson, W. J. Phillips, B, Gray and W. E. Barber were also present.
Correspondence was received from the district engineer, N.Z.R., who drew the attention of the Council to pipes under the waterway crossing the road between Motuiti and Himitangi being filled with silt.— Left with overseer.
Department of Lauds and Survey, asking that the proclamation authorising deviation of road through Te Kawau Block, near Raugiotu, be comp! —Lett with the chairman.
From Mr E. Newman, M.P., stating that the Premier had asked tor an urgent report on the Ohakea protective works, and that a Go verument grant is anticipated.— Received.
T. Hayes, enquiring terms on which Council would let the cottage near the old ferry at the Shannon bridge,—Lease granted for 3 years at terms to be arranged.

The County Treasurer, Mr A. K. Drew, repotted balances of accounts as follows :—General account, dr, los gd ; loan account, cr, £it>9 15s id. Riding accounts; —Waitohl, cr, £lO 15s 8d ; Rougotea, cr, ,£143 ns 2d ; Carnarvon, ci, ; Whirokiuo, cr, ,£194 8s 4d ; Sandon, dr, £22 8s lid ; Mt. Stewart, dr, £z\ 6s ; Kawakawa, dr, ,£lßl is 2d ; and Awahou, dr, ,£125 18s nd. GENERAE. Cr J. Henson proposed, and Cr Barber seconded, that applications be called for the position ol dliver on the tramvyays, and Crs. Wilson, Henson, Phillips and McKenzie be a committee to deal with same. —Carried.
Mr S. Somers, of Glen Oroua, attended, and requested a refund of ios paid to the ranger under protest. The ranger, Mr Moran, stated that Mr Somers was some distance ahead of the cows, which were grazing on the road. He impounded the cows and Mr Somers then came along and claimed them. It was resolved that, in the circumstances, Mr Somers’ action was reasonable, and the refund of fee collected was agreed to. Mr T. Stuart, of Awahuri, appeared in support of a petition signed by 20 settlers, asking that the roads be thrown open for grazing. The signatories had anticipated such action on the part 0! the Council, as had been done in past years, and had closed their paddocks for hay. At last meeting a counter petition was presented with a like number of signatures. After discussion it was decided to keep the roads closed for the pre sent mouth, and to close against stock grazing, the boundary road between Rangiotu and Kawakawa ridings. —On the motion of Crs Barber and Phillips, it was decided to ask the settlers on the Whiro kino road to cut back willows overhanging the tramway line. The meeting then adjourned.
