SCULLING.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION SHIP. ARNST DEFEATED. Sydney, Ncv. i.

The race for, the Australian Sculling Championship, The Referee Challenge Cup and /200 aside was rowed on the Parramatta River to-day. It resulted as follows: —

James Paddou, of Evans Head

(the holder) Richard Arnst, of Sydney (the challenger)

The first mile was coveted in 6min issec. The race was rowed on the slack side of the water. In the early part of the race the water was smooth, but afterwards there was a choppy wind. This was not sufficient to interfere much with either sculler. Paddou wou the choice of positions. He was quicker away and soon had a slight lead, both rowing splendidly. At the end of the first mile Paddon was a good length in front. At Putney be had increased his lead to a length and a halt, which, iu spite of Arnst’s strenuous efforts, he held to the Gasworks. Arnst’s spurt slightly reduced the lead at that stage, but Paddon responding, istablished a two lengths’ lead. Arnst came again gamely, but the champion easily held him, and from that out steadily forged ahead. Arnst fought gamely to the finish, having rowed a great, gruelling, stern chase from the first few strokes.
