MR WEBB AND THE POLICE.

“ Whatever I can do to organise the police independently of anything that Parliament may do I am going to do it,” declared Mr Webb, the newly elected member for Grey, in speaking on the third reading of the Police Force Bill. The Minister for Justice (Hon. A. L- Herdman), in commenting on this statement, said : “Imagine the condition of things that would arise if you had a police association controlled and influenced by the member for Grey.” Mr Webb : They would not do what they did at Waihi under your influence.

Mr Herdman said that if the police had been under the influence of the member for Grey during the Waihi trouble, instead of one death there might have been several. If an association such as that desired were allowed to exist in the police force, it would be a danger to the whole community. No doubt prominent labour leaders were at the back of the movement. No Government with a proper sense of its responsibility would tolerate such a state of affairs.
