STRAYING CATTLE.

The poundbeeper reported at last night’s Council meeting that during last month 21 head of cattle had been impounded by the radger, the driving fees amounting to 16s.

Cr Coley said that during the afternoon he had counted 47 head of cattle in Union street and the Avenue. The ranger was not impounding anything like the amount of stock that was on the roads.

Cr Chrystall mentioned that some residents made a practice of turning their stock on the roads when they knew that the ranger was working at the mill.

Councillors also stated that complaints had been received of gates being deliberately opened by some person and stock allowed to get out on to the roads. The Mayor said that they would never get satisfaction in regard to ranging until they consolidated some of the borough offices, such as Inspector of Nuisances, etc., and paid a man a reasonable salary to do the lot. It was decided that the attention of the police be drawn to the number of stock straying on the roads, and that they be asked to take proceedings against the •Senders.
