A RAILWAY SENSATION.
MAORI EXPIRES ON THE
TRAIN,
While the northward bound New Plymouth express was between Porirua and Paekakariki yesterday morning a slight sensation was caused by a Maori passenger suddenly becoming violently ill and expiring shortly afterwards. Deceased, it appears, had previously been standing on the platform conversing with some other natives, and left to resume his seat in a carriage, when he appeared to have suddenly taken a fit.
The guard was immediately called, and everything possible was done in the circumstances for the native, but of no avail. On arrival at Paekakarikij the police were informed of the occurrence, and the body was removed from the train.
Deceased’s luggage was addressed “ Putara, Hawera.” He was a well-set-up native, weighing about 15 stone, and was well dressed. He is believed to have come from Picton. The natives who were with deceased stated he was walking about Wellington in the morning and appeared to be in good health.
