The regular meeting c£ >f be Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. present: Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), R. B. McKenzie, W. J. Phillips, J. Henson, H. H. Hunt, B. Gray, and W. E. Barber. Correspondence was read as follows :
From the Department of Lands and Survey, stating that a map of the portion of the county between the Himatangi block, the Foxton borough, and the Manawatu river would cost £2 1 os. From Palmerston Hospital Board, stating the Manawatu County Council’s levy on the sup. plemeutary estimates was 9s sd.
From Horowhecua County Council asking Manawatu County Council to re-consider the objection to Mr R. Gardener as arbitrator on the Foxtou-Shannon road matter. 7
The County Treasurer reported s General account, cr., 133 3d ; loans account, cr., £169 153 id.
A vailable for expenditure : Mt. Stewart ,£22 10s 6d, Waitohi 2s 2d, Rongotea 16s 2d, Carnarvon £lB7 10s 6d, Wbirokino 6s qd. Over expended s Sandon £g 173. x id, Kawakawa £j 11 6s Bd, Awahou 9s nd. The Overseer reported on Awahou Riding as follows : The usual repairs have been effected on the Foxton-Shannon road and Elkins-Motuiti roads In the shape of repairing weak places. The sand drift at the end of Karikari road has been soiled down. Holes have been filled in on the Whirokiuo road and a great deal of trimming has been done on . . Nos. 1 and 2 Lines, and also repairs on the Foxton Beach road. I have bad the Palmerstou-Foxton road trimmed up with the load grader, and Mr Cooksley has almost completed his contract for delivering metal on this road. The Tramway Manager reported that owing to extra items having to be paid for this month, a debit balance of 7s was made. The chief items off freight were: Merchandise 105 tons, flax 47 trucks, timber 23,000 feet, minerals, grain and manure 155 tons. The fares amounted to £5 os yd. The axle boxes of locomotive “ Rangitikei ” require renewing, and several other repairs effected. The cost to have everything completed will be .£.39 2s 6d. The Council spent an hour discussiug stone crushers. Information regarding several makes was laid before the members and considered. Ultimately Cr. McKenzie proposed that a sub committee, consisting of Crs. Henson, Hunt, and the mover, be set up to go further into the matter and p make a recommeudatiou to uext meeting. The Council decided, however, to purchase the crusher at once.
Wilh regard to destruction of birds, Cr McKenzie said be would object to any attempt .to kill starlings, which he considered the most valauble birds they had. On the motion of Cr Barber, it was agreed to inform the Horpwhenua County Council that this Council would not alter its decision J with regard to Mr Gardener's appointment as arbitrator.
