FIRE AT BAINESSE.
A twelve-roomed house at Bainesse, owned and occupied by Mr R. de J. Vautier, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night. It apipears that Mr and Mrs Vautier’s two and a-half year old child was put to bed at about 7 o’clock and a lighted caudle was left in the room. This by some means was apparently upset as Mr Vautier heard a crackling noise about half an hour later, and on entering the bedroom found the wall a mass of flames. The child when saved was almost chocking. An effort was made to extinguish the flames but they had too big a hold, and the building with the whole of its contents was totally destroyed. The building was valued at and the furniture at ,£4OO. In addition to the above an oil painting, the work of Mr Vantier’s great grandfather, and valued at was also destroyed. For this painting Mr Vautier had refused an offer of .£4OO. The total insurance was ,£650.
