BOWLING.

The weather was fine yesterday alternoon, and there was consequently a large attendance of members at the official opening of the local bowling green. The opening ceremony was performed by the President (Mr H. Witchell), who referred to the splendid progress made by the club, which had only been in existence some three years. He paid a tribute to the good work of the caretaker, and welcomed the visitors from Levin and Otaki. He also read a telegram from the Terrace End Club, regretting inability to be represented at the opening, and wishing the club a successful season. He called upon Mrs Witchell to “roll-up” the first bowl.

The croquet lawns were also opened, and both were fully occupied during the alternoon. On the bowling green teams were selected by the President and Vice-president. There were three full rinks, and 17 heads were played, the Vice-president’s teams winning by 51 to 47, Afternoon tea for players and visitors was supplied by Mrs Witchell.
