MINERS DOWN TOOLS.
STOCKTON MINE IDLE
Westport, Trouble occurred at Um€ Stockton mine this morning over the question of what constitutes the mine mouth iu new workings. The men claimed! that time began from the tim pi of entering the mouth of old mine, whereas the management claimed that it began fr'rom the time of entering the moiuth of the new mine. The secticm of men employed at the latter works turned to in accordance with their contentions, but were ordered off home, whereupon (all the men employed at the mine, '-.numbering about two hundred, (downed tools, stating that a locki out had occurred. The company I only recently opened the new miue-mcuth, which is about a mile and a half distant from the mouth of the old mine. At present only a small numbed of men are working there, but it Is hoped, before long, to have a large number employed. The company’s cars iu which the men travel, cover the distance in about ten minutes, so that the loss per man per day coming and going, if the demands are conceded, will be twenty minutes. The company claim that the agreement was never intended to be so interpreted, and that, to grant the demand made, would seriously hamper dhe financial working of the mine.
