AN ARTIFICIAL GULLET.
An interesting part of the proceedings of the Section of Surgery, at the Medical Congress in London, was a demonstration by Mr Arthur Evans (London) of the case of a woman of 43, who had bad the larynx and a large portion of the gullet removed for cancer four years ago. At the present time the patient was breathing through a tracheotomy tube. A rubber tube passed from the back of her mouth through an opening in the neck outside her body to an opening made in the stomach. She was able to chew all kinds of food and swallow, so that food passed into the stomach through this artificial gullet. The operator was congratulated on all sides on the success of a most daring and ingenious operation. The patient was shown to the section, and was seen to be in excellent health.
