LOYAL BOER STATESMAN.
“THE EMPIRE FOR ALL.”
Capetown, August 24
A dinner was held at Parliament House in honour of the officers of the Australian warships. The Hon. De Waal, representing the Union Government, piesided over two hundred guests. Mr De Waal proposed the toast of Australia and in the course of a speech, referring to Mr Hertzog’s recent statement that it was a pernicious principle to consult the British Government in regard to the Navy, recalled the lact that Mr Hofmeyer, at the London and Ottawa Conferences, bad advocated a contribution to the Imperial Navy by means of a super tax on foreign goods. He added that Mr Plofmeyer on that occasion represented the views of the whole population of the Cape, and he declared emphatically that the Dutchmen’s views were unchanged. “South Africa,” he continued, "will take up her burden and the world will realise more and more that although the cry is Australia for Australians, Canada for the Canadians, and South Africa for South Africans, the Empire is for us all 1” Admiral Patey responding, said it was right for each of the overseas Dominions to decide for itself the best way of contributing to the defence of the Empire. He was sure the whole of the Dominions, whatever political party was in power, had the good of the Empire at heart.
