SKATING CARNIVAL.

The manager of the Municipal skating rink, Mr McArtney, is to be heartily congratulated upon the measure of success which attended his efforts in organising and carrying out Thursday night’s skating carnival in the Town Hall. The interior of the hall was artistically decorated. The commodious stage was set apart for the public, and proved a splendid vantage spot for its full complement of spectators. The orchestral pit was specially reserved for Councillors and their wives, and others. The circle was well filled, but did not provide such a good view of the floor as the stage. The Borough Band played a number of selections during the evening. About sixty ladies and gentlemen in fancy costume occupied the floor, including visitors from Levin and Palmerston N. Mr Watt, of Palmerston, officiated as judge in the various competitions, except those decided by the voting of the audience. The refreshment room was in the hands of Mr M. Perreau, who appeared to be kept very busy. The proceedings opened with the Grand March at 8 o’clock. The Mayor said before presenting the prizes to the winners of the various competitions, he wished to express his great satisfaction at the success of the carnival, and he would specially mention the part that the manager of the rink, Mr McArtney, had taken in carrying this function out. Great praise was due to him and he wished to thank him publicly for his zeal in all matters connected with the hall. To-night’s function was a good sample of municipal enterprise and he was pleased to see the splendid support accorded them in their endeavour to provide entertainment for the people. He wished to thank the visitors from Levin and Palmerston who had assisted to make the function so successful, and the Band for their attendance that evening. Mr J. Colder presented a special prize of a hat pin to Miss Cooper lor the second largest hat worn.

The poster dress worn by Mr Mitchell and which was awarded first prize by the audience, well deserved the honour. It was an ingeniously constructed boxshaped body on the four sides of which were artistically worded and pictorial advertisements in reference to the world’s leading film makers with the trade marks neatly arranged at each top corner. The box was surmounted by a smaller box representing a cine machine electrically illuminated. The wording was: “Municipal Pictures. We show the world’s films by leading makers.”
