FORTUNE FOR A DOCTOR.
Many doctors are making fortunes. One well-known Sydney surgeon, with past experience of similar “scares,'’ ordered all the lymph on sight from Melbourne when the first case was discovered. Then he waited. For the last fortnight he has, with the aid of a couple of assistants, averaged xoqo
vaccinations a day. He charges from 5s to ios 6d, according to the circumstances of the patient. This works out at *250 a day. His vaccine costs him 10s a day, and up to the present he has netted between /3000 and from the outbreak, with business increasing instead of diminishing. Surely, it is an ill-wind that blows nobody good. Other doctors are just as willing to make money, but they cannot get the lymph. Some are charging two guineas a time, a great many a guinea, while the usual charge is 10s fid. It is extortion, of course, but so many people are so thoroughly frightened that they will pay anything so long as they are vaccinated.
