The stranded whale attracted a very large number of visitors to the beach yesterday, some comiug from Palmerstou N. The smell to windward of the stranded monster is becoming very pungent. There is a considerable amount of correspondence taking place in the newspapers, particulary at Auckland, touching vaccination and the anti-vaccinators appear to be having all the best of the argument. The Awahou sailed at midday yesterday tor Wellington, and the Queen of the South arrived from Wellington with a big cargo of general merchandise, and sailed again last night for the same port with a cargo of hemp. A teacher at the Mauaia school was impressing on the children the necessity of vaccination in view of the small-pox epidemic. A youngster on his return home breathlessly told his mother that they must be “assassinated” to protect them from small pox.
Mr George Takurua, an experienced Maori whaler, inspected the stranded whale on the beach this morning, and said it is what is known as a “piebald humpback,” He said it has been dead about a week. The estate of the late Mr Fry, head of the cocoa manufacturing firm, was proved at ,£700,000. He bequeathed £52,000 to foreign missions, ,£47,000 to hospitals, £43,000 to charities, and legacies to all his employees with five years’ service. A rardman, scantily attired and holding a Bible in one hand and a fancy table-cloth in the other, startled a Burtou-on-Treut railway signalman on duty. Asked why he was there the intruder said he had been to a reception held by the Chinese Emperor and other microbes. The manager of a large firm, a hot-tempered, somewhat grumbling man, had occasion, or thought he had, to rebuke one of his clerks for some slight mistake. r The clerk attempted to explain the matter, when the chief cut him short by exclaiming : “ Book here, sir, are you the manager or am I?” ,l Well, Tm not,” said the clerk. “ Then if you are not the manager,” said the enraged chief very emphatically, _ “ why are you speaking like au idiot ?” Drivers of motor cars along the Beach road should exercise a little more care when attempting to pass vehicles in that locality, as the road in places is very narrow with a high crown, and passing is very risky, particularly if the horse is nervous. The driver of a Palmerston car yesterday afternoon with] selfish hoggishness, in his anxiety to chase everything off the track, narrowly averted toppling a vehicle occupied by several ladies, over the bank when passing. The pupils of the upper Standards attending the local State school, in charge of the teachers, marched to the Beach yesterday for the purpose of seeing the stranded whale. The youngsters were delighted with the outing, and were astonished at the immensity of the cetacean. A number of boys climbed on the monster, irrespective of the clinging odour, while others were busy cutting off strips of skin, A number of photographs were taken. It appears that private medical practitioners have a grievance in connection with the small-pox scare. They are unable to obtain any lymph, and are consequently unable to meet the demands of a considerable number of people who desire to be vaccinated by their own doctor instead of by the public vaccinator. “ This means,” said one doctor in conversation with a representative of a contemporary, ‘‘that very considerable expense is being quite unnecessarily cast upon the State. Many people being quite prepared to bear the cost of vaccination themselves providing they can have it done privately, and the failure of the Health Department to supply us with lympth compels these people to go to the public vaccinators who do the work at half-a-crown a head at the expense of the taxpayers. If every doctor was supplied with a small quantity of lymph, tor use in the course of his ordinary practice, the saving to the State would be enormous, * Aa aggressive labourite of the agitator type met his match iu the chairman of the Works Committee of the Wanganui Borough Council. The aggresive one was obviously “ under the influence,” and he accosted the Councillor somewhat abruptly. “ You’re one of those wanting the borough work done by contract, ajnt yer.” “ Well, yes,” was the reply. “ I am of opinion that a good deal of the borough work could be more economically carried out under contract. Why?” “ Because yer don’t get another vote of mine, and I’m out to put your pot on at the next election.” The councillor was rather tickled. “Oh, you’re out to put my pot ou, are you?” he said. “Now tell me, how many half drunken fellows like yourself do you think there are ou the borough roll ?” The aggressive one was badly hit. He couldn’t find au answer. “ Come ou,” said the councillor, “ would you say there’s a couple of hundred ? Let it go at that, say there’s a couple of hundred. I’ll give you the lot, and then there will be enough decent people left to euable me to top the poll. Good day!”
