BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday night to confirm motion striking and levying rates for the current year and to transact general business. There 'were present—His Worship the Mayor {G. H. Stiles, Esq.) and Crs Coley, Chrystall, Green, Read, Whibley, Henderson, Barber and Speirs. An apology for absence was received from Cr Freeman. The motion confirming the striking of the rates was carried. PRICE OF METAL. A letter was read from Mr Buick, who supplied some 570 yards of metal during the last few months, stating that the price of same was 3s 3d per yard, not 2s 6d per yard as paid by the Council, Mr Buick stated that the Council was advised of the increase in price in November last. The Town Clerk said he could find no letter from Mr Buick advising of any increase in price, and Mr Fraser had informed him that he had not received a letter to this effect from Mr Buick. It was decided on the motion of Cr Whibley, seconded by Cr Green, that the Town Clerk be instructed to write Mr Buick with reference to bis account in which a higher price lor metal is charged and stating that the only price quoted by Mr Buick was at the rate of 2s 6d per yard, and the Council cannot see its way to pay any additional rate on contracts that have expired. HARBOUR STREET. A letter was read from Mr Bock on behalf of the flaxmillers concerned, advising that they have discussed the question of the improvement of Harbour Street, and were of opinion that if the road was widened in places and formed up to carry the traffic, that was all that could be done at the present season of the year and it could be properly formed and -metalled at the best time —in the early autumn—and the millers would then be prepared to consider the question of bearing portion of the cost of the work. The Mayor submitted estimates of the cost of the work. For forming and metalling 15 chains from the Shipping Company’s shed to Main Street, ,£l4O 10s; formation only, 15s. Formation and metalling from Main Street to Borough boundary, 22 chains, 8s; formatiou only, £2l 1 os. Cr Coley said that it was not necessary to do anything to the street from Main Street to the Shipping Co.’s shed and if it were done it would always be a source of trouble. As far as the other portion of the street was concerned it could easily be drained and the worst of the holes filled up, but to form it up with the heavy traffic that was on it at present would be simply throwing the money away. It was decided on the motion of Cr Chrystall, seconded by Cr Coley, that the water be drained off Harbour Street from Main Street to the Borough boundary and that the worst of the ruts be filled in with coarse metal. FIRE INSPECTORS. Cr Henderson moved and Cr Barber seconded, that Mr Peter Robinson be appointed Fire Inspector in place of Mr Stunell, as the latter is unable to give the attention necessary when a fire •occurs, and take charge ol a fire depot, when erected, containing apparatus, at a salary of £lO per annum. The mover said that at present Mr Stunell held the position, which was an honorary one, but he was unable to properly fulfil the duties, as when a fire occurred he had to look after the gas meters and other property of the Council, and it was necessary that someone else should be appointed. The motion was carried. WATER AND DRAINAGE. Cr Barber suggested calling a special meeting to discuss matters in connection with a water and drainage scheme and it was decided that a meeting for this purpose be held on Wednesday, the 30th instant.
