THE REVIEW OF REVIEWS.
The July number of the Review of Reviews contains a special and illuminating character sketch of the late Mr Pierpoint Morgan. It tells how this much-abused financier again and again saved his country’s cr. dit. it is interesting to learn 'hat for forty years Morgan prepared himself for the great position be ultimately filled. He did not waste himself in his early man! rod ; therefore he was a giant i ' ms old age. The ed’tor gives a farther instalment of his reminiscences of his father, W. T. Stead, telling of the great editor’s imprisonment and his friendship with Cardinal Manning, General Gordon, and Cecil Rhodes, whose sc!" executor he was for many years. Other articles deal with the lessons of the “Titanic,” describing what had been done on iit.;v liners as a result for the safety of passengers. The causes of the troub 1 1 bo.ween the Japanese and the Americans in California are discussed, the writer pointing out that the Japanese are not cheap labourers, and staling < that the real cause of irritation is the refusal of the Japanese to recognise the superiority of the Americans, and the successful way in which they have demonstrated that they are their superiors in certain trades and businesses. The history of the mouth in Caricature is particularly good, giving reproductions of the cleverest cartoons appearing all over the world on topics of the time. Special reviews by Mr Alex Jobson of the balancesheets of certain companies add greatly to the value of this most interesting and useful jourual, Mr Stead, iu his Progress of the World, writes on events here and iu Europe. The frontispiece is an exquisite sketch of Mdll. Scbmolz, of the Russian Imperial Ballet, specially done for the Review of Reviews.
