PRESENTATION TO MR FRASER.

Yesterday afternoon at Whyte’s Hotel, Mr Alf. Fraser, late Town Clerk, was the recipient of a presentation irom the Mayor and Councillors. Those present were the guests ot Mr Ten Freeman and when afternoon tea had been partaken of the presentation was made. The Mayor and all the Councillors, with the exception of Cr Green, who is out of the district, were present, also Mr Gibbs (ex-Mayor and ex-Councillor) and Mr C. J. Kent-Johnston, Town Clerk. The Mayor, in making the presentation, referred to the esteem in which Mr Fraser was held by the Council and burgesses, both as a Town Clerk and also as a citizen. Mr Fraser’s connection with the Council extended over a period of seventeen years, two years as Councillor, one as Mayor and 14 as Town Clerk. Mr Stiles eulogised his work in bis official capacity and said he was sure the position could not have been better filled. He asked him to accept a silver-mounted travelling writing case, as a memento of the time he had spent in the Council’s employ and a small mark of the esteem in which he was held by the Council. He concluded by wishing Mr Fraser long life and success in his new sphere ot labour. He also took the opportunity of welcoming the new Town Clerk, Mr Kent-Johnstou, saying that from the manner in which he had entered upon bis duties he was sure he was going to make a very worthy successor to Mr Fraser. Senior-Councillor Chrystall expressed pleasure at being present and endorsed the Mayor’s remarks as to the splendid services Mr Fraser had rendered to the Borough. Mr Gibbs followed in a similar strain.
Mr Fraser returned thanks for the very kind remarks that had been made and also for the handsome presentation. During bis term of office he had tried to do his duty, the work had given him a good deal of pleasure, and it was indeed the highest reward he. could get to know that his services had been appreciated. Mr Fraser referred to the advancement made by the Borough during the past seventeen years and said he felt sure that the enterprises undertaken would all ultimately result beneficirlly to the Borough. He concluded with some eulogistic references to the capabilities of his successor in whom he felt sure the Council bad a splendid officer. Mr Keut-Johnslou returned thanks for the kind remarks in reference to himself and said that he would strive to do his utmost to carry out the duties to the satisfaction of all concerned.
The Mayor moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Freeman for their kindness in entertaining them and also referred to the interest taken by Mr Freeman in the affairs of the Borough. Mr Freeman briefly replied and the gathering was brought to a close.
