FOXTON’S SANITATION.
At Monday night’s Council meeting a petition was presented from the residents in Johnston Street praying that steps should be taken to prevent residents from draining cess pits into the Awahou Creek, and Mr E. Dunn was in attendance in connection with same.
The Mayor said that as regarded the draining of cess pits into the drains this was absolutely pro* hibited by the Council. The matter under discussion was being attended to by the District Hospital Board, who had arrauged for Dr. Chesson and Mr O’Brien to pay a visit of inspection and under the circumstances he did not think the Council could do anything more. All they could do was to follow the instructions of the Health Department. He moved and Cr Coley seconded and it was carried, that this Council assures the petitioners that they will use their best endeavours to get the matters complained of attended to and that this Council ask Dr. Chesson to visit urgently and report on these matters.
The Inspector of Nuisances reported at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council as follows : “The borough is in a fairly clean condition with one or two exceptions which are being put right, but the old house in Main Street next to Mr Speirs’ timber yard, the property of Gray’s Estate is not fit to live in and the sanitary appliances are very bad. I would like you to send someone to look at it with me. I had a promise that it would be put right but nothing has been done.” —The report was adopted.
